History

Bear Lumber Company was founded in 1932 by Theodore Lawrence Bear Sr. Known as T.L. by friends and family, he was a native of Vevay Indiana who moved to Montgomery in 1900 to join Crampton Lumber Company. Having reached the position of manager within the company, he later branched out on his own to form Bear Lumber Company. The purpose of the company was simple; to provide high quality millwork and building materials for use in homes and general construction at a reasonable cost. These values continue to this day.

Mr. Bear’s six sons continued the tradition by joining the family business. Together they formed Bear Brothers Construction. The sons were men of uncommon ability with executive leadership qualities which have grown Bear Lumber Co., and Bear Brothers Inc., into two of Alabama’s largest lumber and contracting businesses.

Today, Bear Brothers Inc. is owned and operated by the grandson of T.L. Bear, Clyde S Bear II. He continues the tradition of high quality commercial construction. Bear Lumber Company operates in the same location in historical downtown Montgomery, Alabama. In 2010, Clyde’s son Stuart took the helm of wholesale and retail lumber and millwork businesses. Bear Lumber Co. and Bear Brothers Inc represent four generations of experience and trustworthiness for your building material and contracting needs.
